Premier Cup : Kedah represent Malaysia in Manchester

MSS Kedah football team of 20 youth under 15 years old from all over the world would have competed in the Manchester United Premier Cup 2010 from 4 to 7 August.

They also will face the team of world superstars such as youth clubs Manchester United and Newcastle United (England), Barcelona (Spain), FC Porto (Portugal), Werder Bremen (Germany) and Paris St Germain (France).

Other clubs involved in the MUPC is Torino (Italy); Bucaspor (Turkey), Colo-Colo (Chile), Internacional (Brazil), FC Pachuca (Mexico), Alta Loma Arsenal (United States); Sutherland Sharks (Australia); Orlando Pirates (South Africa); Right To Dream (Ghana); Middle School Ulsan Hyundai (South Korea); Kyoto Sanga FC (Japan); Changchun Yatai FC (China) and Shillong Lajong FC (India).

Head Coach MSS Kedah, Barkis Ismail said, the success of MSS Kedah qualified to the tournament because they are proud of the first local team made it to the MUPC which dates back to 1993.
"It's great for our young players to gain exposure to the pattern of international games.

"This opportunity should not be released to prove that we really do not lack talent," he said when met at Jitra, Kedah, recently.

He said the opportunity to face the players from European clubs will also provide valuable experience to the players.

"They may lack the physical, but we will play it smart without relying solely on physical size," he said.

MSS Kedah players lined the educated from the Project 10 Years MSS Kedah Football Development, which began in 2005, while 16 players in the squad now started the past two years were collected.

Some of them also have experience playing at international level when it joined the Danone Cup in France in 2006 and cuppy Cup in Croatia in 2007.

MUPC squad that qualified for the champions after the Southeast Asia, held in Penang in 7 to 10 June last year by beating teams from Indonesia, Villa 2000, 5-3 in a penalty determination.
Before the MSS Kedah is a national champion after beating SMK Putera, Kota Bharu, Kelantan 1-0 at the Bukit Jalil on 22 May.

In the tournament, two players, namely a midfielder MSS Kedah, Muhammad Syafiq Ahmad, 15, was chosen as the Most Valuable Player by the coaches in the South-East Asia, while goalkeeper Mohd Anis Ismail, 15, was chosen as the Best Goalkeeper in the national championship. Barkis said the squad is undergoing intensive training since three weeks ago and prepared it the name at the international level.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Syafiq when interviewed, said he is looking forward to playing in Manchester and promised to give the best performance.

"I want to prove we do not lack talented players and can compete with players from top clubs, mainly from Europe and South America," he said.

Another player, Mohamad Amirul Hisham Awang Kechik, 15, hopes the tournament can help achieve our ambitions to be a professional footballer.

"The experience of the young players to face top European clubs would I use it as soon as possible.

"Despite the small stature and thin, but as a midfielder I'll prove it can compete with European players who are mostly over-built to take advantage of the common pattern of the game than physical," said the skipper also MSS Kedah.

MUPC which began in 1993 involving the participation of more than 9,000 teams from 43 countries worldwide since its inception.

In fact, MUPC also known for producing some of the world's stars, including Fernando Torres, Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas (Spain), Carlos Tevez (Argentina) and Robinho (Brazil).

National players such as twins, Zafuan and Zaquan Aidil Adha Abdul Razak and Mohd Khyril Muhymeen Zambri also emerged from the courts.
